"Everyone talks about age, but it's not about age. It's about work ethic. Winning never gets old."
~ Lisa Leslie
What is meant by professional ethics?
According to the ministry of business, innovation, and employment of New Zealand, "Professional ethics are principles that govern the behavior of a person or group in a business environment. Like values, professional ethics provide rules on how a person should act towards other people and institutions in such an environment." so, professional ethics is mainly connected to codes of conduct, following the codes the person acts according to values and principles although their own values may differ they may still have all the same principles.
Professional ethics corporates the standard behavior expected from professionals, having the morals, values, and their own principles.
Professional ethics evaluates the moral aspect of human behavior and attitude in the professional fields and industries that aspire to attain professional status. It regards the moral behavior that manages the industry and its employees. In general, it explores difficulties, problems, and the social responsibility of the industry as a whole as well as individual practitioners among their duty and obligation.
Professional ethics is significant since it develops principles and guidelines for professionals to implement while dealing with the individuals with whom they interact daily. Ethics, from a philosophical point of view, is concerned with morality and how individual behavior leads in terms of right and wrong.
Workplace ethics
According to Jobstreet there are 5 common work ethics, and these are:
1. Integrity
integrity is one of the most important workplace ethics. employees with integrity are the people who the company/organization values the most as they are the people the management can count on. the higher the moral values the higher the management regards them with care. because the people with the higher moral values are likely to be bent on doing the right things
at all times.
2. Honesty
Honesty is one of the most sought core values in life. a person who is all about honesty is a keeper, not only for a company but as a friend, an honest person is the most sought person. and adding a person with the kind of principle is worth keeping. furthermore, clients mostly deal only with a business or service provider whom they really trust. also, in the workplace, an honest person is the only person who can you rely on with the companies secrets and to continue their best in their fields of jobs for the company's benefit.
3. Discipline Discipline
In professional ethics, discipline is important. disciplined employees are extremely important figures in an organization as they ensure that all given tasks on hand are executed in an arranged manner. employees that are disciplined are dedicated to doing their work more than anyone in the organization.
4. Fair and respect
Achieving a harmonious workplace involves the cooperation of every employee in the organization, no matter what your position level is. to achieve that, being fair is the key, ensuring your actions are just and side with no one and be fair in everything, and respect everyone in the organization for you to be also respected. especially that everyone deserves to be treated with respect.
5. Responsible and accountable
A responsible employee will always be responsible with his/her tasks and will always show up at work on time, making sure that time is not wasted, every seconds and minute are gold to them. as everyone knows, employees are also human, and humans can also make mistakes. hence, it is important to also be able to acknowledge these mistakes, be accountable for them, and accept consequences.
